Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) is a full-time comprehensive university with a strong emphasis on engineering, distinctive features in management studies and arts, and the coordinated development of various disciplines including engineering, management studies, arts, law, science, medicine, economics, and literature. SUES is one of the first batches of pilot universities under the Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program of Ministry of Education, the pioneer of Emerging Engineering Education and High-level Application-oriented Universities in Shanghai. In 2024, SUES was approved as a doctoral degree-awarding university and granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Mechanical Engineering.
The predecessor of SUES can be traced back to the establishment of the Mechanical and Electrical Branch of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1978 (including the incorporation of the Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology in 1984) and the Branch of East China Textile Engineering Institute. In 1985, with the approval of Ministry of Education, Shanghai University of Engineering Science was formally established on the basis of the Mechanical and Electrical Branch of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Branch of East China Textile Engineering Institute. In 2003, with the approval of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, Shanghai Technician School (founded in 1951) was integrated into Shanghai University of Engineering Science as a whole.
The three campuses of SUES, Songjiang, Changning, and Hongkou, cover nearly 87.2 hectares, with a total construction area of 725,100 square meters. The total fixed assets amount to approximately 3.583 billion yuan, and the teaching and research instruments are valued at about 1.395 billion yuan. SUES has established the following schools/colleges: School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, School of Management Studies, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Art and Design, International Institute of Creative Design, School of Air Transportation (School of Flying), School of Textiles and Fashion, School of Urban Railway Transportation, School of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics, School of Foreign Languages, School of Marxism, College of International Education, College of Continuing Education, Higher Vocational and Technical College, Department of Physical Education, Engineering Training Center, General Education Center, as well as the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center and National University Science Park.
